Are You Gullible? Train For A Career In Computers!

I have just watched another one of these adverts on the TV. You may have seen their ads in the jobs pages of the local press. The gist of it is - if you're mopping the floor or stacking the shelves, you should pay a few thousand pounds to this firm and they'll make sure you get a job paying over £38k.

This is apparently the average IT wage, according to all the ads placed in Computer Weekly. Of course, the idea that jobs - for IT Directors and Senior Analyst Programmers with 10yrs experience - should somehow factor in their equations is a bit hard to believe.

I have worked, briefly, with the product of one of these courses. He was able to make ethernet cables, and plug things in, but apparently not much else was covered in the course. His guaranteed placement was two weeks voluntary work at a local college.

All of this training isn't free. You have to pay for it. £3,500 to do your study course. If you're already earning £38k, this may not worry you too much, but if you're on the checkouts at Asda, it's major money to gamble. They may like to allay your fears by telling you they guarantee you'll pass, but you have to take one of their tests and pass that, before they'll actually guarantee anything of the sort.

In short - if you are gullible - give your money to Computeach. If you're actually serious about starting a career in IT, maybe try getting to the point where you've got more of an idea about what you want to do before you ring anyone and say 'I want to work in computers'.
